A tiny ice pellet within a cumulonimbus cloud collides with water droplets between 8,000 and 10,000 feet high. As it gains weight, it falls. As it encounters the strong updrafts of hot summer air in the cloud, it is tossed back up to the top of the cloud where it freezes.
