Thirteen years later, on his deathbed, Middleton recorded a shocking video where he not only named his attacker, but he also mentioned that the said person had raped him two weeks prior to the incident. It was the first time that the rape incident was every mentioned publicly.
The Middleton family's lawyer David Walker, filed murder charges against 27-year-old Don Collins; upon the release of sexual assault allegations, Walker was allowed to file charges as a felony murder
Collins was 13 when he allegedly tied the 8-year-old Middleton to a tree, threw a cup of gasoline in his face and lit him up. The brutal attack happened on a forest path near the boys' homes in Splendora, Texas.
Middleton was left with blackened skin and burned-off eyelids, needing over 200 operations and extensive physical therapy to repair the damage. He eventually died on April 2011, at the age of 20, from a type of Cancer that only occurs as a direct result from complications of the skin grafts in third-degree burns. His death was ruled as a homicide.
The dead boy's parents were given $150 billion in a civil lawsuit against Collins in December 2011.
