Indie Film About Traditional Courtship "Pamanhikan" by Filipino-American Director

The Philippines is home to a lot of cultural traditions, especially ones that go on before marriage. Pamanhikan is one of the most common Filipino tradition that involves the family of the groom "courting" the family of the bride.

Filipino-American filmmaker Angelo Santos created a comedic short film entitled "Pamanhikan" regarding an interracial gay couple's families and how they deal with each other during the visit. He said that he was inspired by the legalization of same-sex marriage in New York.

Pamanhikan won the Best Screenplay Short at the 2013 Vail Film Festival in Colorado.
