An outraged netizen posted a video of a mother heartlessly slapping her crying newborn in Pasay City General Hospital. The viral video triggered the investigation of Social Welfare and Development Secretary Corazon ‘Dinky’ Soliman.
In an interview with “24 Oras,” Soliman said the agency will closely coordinate with the hospital.
“Mag-coordinate at i-assess, tingnan ang kalagayan ng nanay kung may kakayahan siyang mag-alaga ng isang sanggol. Kasi kung wala siyang kakayahan, kukunin muna namin ‘yung sanggol (We will coordinate and assess if the mother is fit to take care of her child. If not, then we will get the custody of the child),” Soliman said.
The Pasay City General Hospital officials refused to give a statement but they vowed to cooperate with the investigation by DSWD.
The video uploaded by Facebook user Nil Aquino Sabangan has gotten over 1.5 million views and 87,000 shares in a little over a week since upload. An updated report from GMA News said that the mother has been shown the video and is currently under the custody of the Department of Social Welfare and Development.
Rosalinda Orobia, a Pasay City social welfare officer, had said that the mother will undergo psychological evaluation prior to being turned over to an appropriate institution. Orobia said the mother may be transferred to the National Center for Mental Health in Mandaluyong City.
