Due to the barnacle and sharp rocks, dragging the whale back to the water was ill-advised (since it could get snagged or worse). They resorted to keeping the whale protected and hydrated until the high tide.
In an interview, they enumerated a few of the things they did: “Eric put together a McGaver type water pump, we grabbed as many sheets as we could, and Hermann, Bunker and Nicole, Eric and myself went to shore and approached the whale as quietly as possible."
The rescuers could give themselves a pat on the back, knowing they were crucial in helping an Orca return to the sea.
