The past weeks, fear and paranoia gripped the minds of Filipinos when they found out about fake rice circulating in Davao. You know they exist, but how do you determine if the rice you have is poisonous or safe?
According to sources, fake rice has a plastic-like texture. The rice lights up, smells like sweet potato when burned; and, when cold, it has a Styrofoam texture. The rice doesn't spoil even after three weeks and it doesn't stick to the fingers when gripped.
The National Food Authority has investigated the incident in Davao del Sur where the first fake rice was allegedly bought. However, they have failed to trace the source of the synthetic rice. The NFA advises the public not to eat synthetic rice because it's not fit for human consumption.
Davao Mayor Rodrigo Duterte warns importer of fake rice that if they are caught, they will be made to eat their products.
The results of the investigation are still pending.
