Alleged poisonous Durian candies bearing the brand name "Wendy" were sold in schools at Surigao del Sur. 1,081 high school and elementary students were rushed to the hospital last June 10 due to apparent poisoning.
The danger didn't end there since in nearby provinces such as North Cotabato, 44 students were treated for the same reason.
Information officer Marjorie Pagaran said that since the students were simultaneously ill, the city hall had to open its doors for mass treatment. She also noted that most of the students that were affected were from public schools. The Durian candies labels indicated that they were produced by Davao City; samples were sent to Adela Serra Ty Medical Center for tests.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) claimed to have found staphylococcus bacteria in the candies but a complete toxicology report is still pending.
