The Republic of the Philippines is a Christian country with a majority of inhabitants being Roman Catholic as a result of the three hundred years being under the Spanish Colony. Because of the fear of God, people in Bohol decided that the best way to protect wildlife and stop dynamite fishing for good would be to put a Mother Mary statue underwater so that the fishermen will see the statue looking up at them (pleading their good hearts and conscience).
According to sources, dynamite fishing has ceased entirely in the area; and the Mother Mary statue is now considered a tourist attraction for scuba divers and snorkelers.
